  • Information to organize a side-event

    +

Agroforestry 2019 encourages delegates to take the opportunity of the congress to go beyond simple attendance to sessions and organize side-events to network with colleagues, launch new ideas, meet partners, etc. To this effect, the evening of Monday 20 May has been kept free, as from 6:30 pm. We also encourage delegates to consider holding side-events before or after the congress, e.g. the week before, the week after, on Sunday 19 May or between 23-25 May if you do not plan to attend a field trip. Different venues can be found in Montpellier. However, please do not plan to organize these events during plenary or parallel sessions.

If you have a side-event in mind, please contact us on agroforestry2019@cirad.fr. We will try to help you. We can also advertise your side-event on the website of the congress. Please note that the congress cannot provide financial support for side-events. All costs should be borne by the organizers of the side-event.

  • ARTrees learning village: Special event for young participants

13-19 May, Mas de l'Olivier, Verargues

    +

    Presentation:
International congresses offer promising venues for young scientists (students and early career researchers) to start building their professional network. However, congresses such as Agroforestry 2019 can be a new and daunting experience for them as they might feel intimidated by the environment and the presence of high-level well-known scientists. With this side event we would like to address these challenges and foster the development of this type of network for young scientists. During one week we will work with 20 participants to get them prepared to make the best from their participation in Agroforestry 2019. Our side event will be the starting point of a mentoring programme that will be pursued during the 3 days of the conference. Confidently it will be the base of a new and productive community of young scientist that will become the next generation of experts in tomorrow’s Agroforestry. ARTrees presentation

Participants: 20 young scientists (students and early career researchers) to be selected upon application

    Venue: Mas de l’Olivier

To apply, please download ARTrees application form  or go to the event’s official website

  • 'Agroforestry and the tenure barrier' FAO Side-event

Sunday 19 May, 4 to 6 pm - The Corum Conference Centre (room Sully 1, level 1)

    +

Around the world, the situation is much the same. Ask farmers if they would consider adding trees to their systems, and often, the first problem to come up will be land tenure.
This side event will explore how land-tenure challenges influence the adoption of agroforestry systems and how this fits in the larger framework of upscaling agroforestry and agroecology. FAO and its partners invite you to join them for an event to review and discuss this important issue. Following a general overview of the main tenure-related challenges and some concrete examples from the field, including the adaptation of a Brazilian successional agroforestry system to Ghana, panelists will discuss the role of Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure and how the issue of tenure fits within the wider framework of 10 Elements of Agroecology. The event will also be the opportunity to launch a new FAO publication on Agroforestry and Land Tenure.

  • Embrapa Side-event

Sunday 19 May, 4 to 6 pm - The Corum Conference Centre (room Sully 2, level 1)

'The Carbon Neutral Brazilian Beef Initiative: agrosilvopastoral systems towards biodiversity and sustainable intensification'

    +

Organizers: Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation - Embrapa

    Public: approx. 40 participants

In its intended Nationally Determined Contribution (iNDC) including mitigation and adaptation measures, Brazil is willing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 37% below 2005 levels in 2025. To be consistent with the 2°C temperature goal, Brazil wishes to strengthen the Low Carbon Emission Agriculture Program (ABC Program), which includes restoration of an additional 15 M hectares of degraded pastureland and enhancing 5 M hectares of crop-livestock-forestry systems by 2030. This side event aims to show the Carbon Neutral Brazilian Beef (CCN) initiative, launched in 2015, as part of an activity for agrosilvopastoral systems. The CCN initiative is a commercial certified label referring to beef cattle produced in integrated zero-tillage systems with mandatory presence of trees that can neutralize greenhouse gas emissions associated with beef production.  It reduces the greenhouse gas emissions associated with production by improving daily cattle weight gain through better pasture quality and the presence of trees. Additionally to carbon storing and improved water cycling and biodiversity, animal welfare is increased. Larger productive and reproductive efficiency can be achieved even of Nelore (Bos indicus), the predominant beef cattle breed in Brazil. Finally, animal welfare is increased favouring a value-added product.
